CMMI Level 5 The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is a process improvement program and service that can be used as a guidance for the organizations to enhance its work performance and productivity. An approach can be implemented in the project or department, and at the level or the whole organization. The first CMMI version was released in 2002 by members of government and at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The program was majorly funded and required by Department of Defense. And it was created to help to identify the goals, improve and maintain products, keep customers satisfied, and ensure that company is working as efficiently as possible. “Process areas” is a basic element in every Capability Maturity Model. Process areas don’t describe how to implement the process but describe what process should be implemented. The CMMI can be used in two different representations - staged and continuous. The staged representation consists of five “maturity levels”. It is suitable for those companies which see problems in many areas and want to improve company overall. However, if the company is mostly satisfied with its work processes and wants to improve particular areas only, it will be more appropriate for the company to choose the continuous representation. As in this case the company is capable of selecting those process areas in which they are interested. One more divergence is that continuous representation consists of capability levels (from 0 through 5) while the staged representation consists of maturity levels (1 through 5). The model identifies five levels of process maturity for an organization: CMMI can be implemented in all types organization, not just for software. But a small organization with limited resources may be less likely to benefit from the program. It worth to mention, a company is rated at a certain level of CMMI. But it is not a certification (like ISO). Of course, a company may publish its results on the website, but it is not obligatory. As any other program, CMMI is oriented in a long time period and implementation of process improvements can take from months to years. And it does not guarantee that applying CMMI will increase performance in every organization.
